Myrtle Road Playground, Hampton VIC

A playful train-inspired space for younger adventurers

Project Overview

Project overview

As part of Bayside City Council’s Playground Improvement Plan, the much-loved train-themed playground at Myrtle Road Reserve in Hampton VIC was renewed to create an updated play experience for local families and Hampton Community Kindergarten users.

Replacing the original ageing train structure, the new playground retains the familiar train theme while introducing modern play opportunities, improved accessibility and engaging sensory elements for younger children.

At the centre of the upgrade is our Industrious Junior Steam Train, a themed play unit designed specifically for early-age play, combining imaginative experiences with progressive physical challenge and interactive activities.

Design and layout

A playground designed to inspire courage, confidence, and resilience through movement and exploration.

The layout was designed to preserve the character and nostalgia of the original playground while delivering a refreshed and more functional space for modern community use.

Finished in neutral tones to complement the surrounding natural landscape, the playground integrates three connected train-themed play elements to create a cohesive and engaging environment for younger users. Existing swings, shade structures and picnic facilities were retained, allowing the upgraded train play zone to sit comfortably within the established reserve.

Constructed using Australian timber and durable materials, the Junior Steam Train combines imaginative play with tactile and sensory experiences suited to early learning and community settings.
