Wantirna Reserve, Wantirna
A major playground upgrade designed for inclusive, all-ages play

Project Overview

Project overview

Wantirna Reserve, located within Koomba Park on Mountain Highway, has undergone a major playspace redevelopment as part of the broader reserve improvements for Knox City Council. The upgrade delivers a brand new playground designed to support children of all ages and abilities, with a strong focus on inclusive play and community use.

The project, completed in November 2025 and supported by the Victorian Government’s New and Upgraded Dog Parks Program, provides a modern, engaging play environment that sits comfortably within the natural bushland setting.

Design and layout

The new playspace brings together natural materials, strong architectural lines and a carefully considered layout that encourages movement, exploration and social connection.

A central vertical feature, the Fortitude Range Rooks Tower creates a striking focal point, offering high-level play and long-slide excitement while maximising play value within a compact footprint. The surrounding elements are arranged to suit a wide range of abilities, with clear sightlines for carers and accessible transition points between play zones.

Complementing this is the Echidna Combination Unit, designed with classic tactile play features such as abacus beads, interactive panels and varied climbing routes. The addition of Bush Hut 3 supports imaginative and social play, giving younger children a dedicated space for creativity and role-play.

Softfall materials, pathways and shaded areas complete the layout, ensuring a safe, comfortable and inclusive environment.

Play Elements

The Wantirna Reserve upgrade includes a diverse mix of high-value play elements:

• Rooks Tower – Fortitude Range
A bold architectural tower combining native timber and Australian steel, featuring multiple climbing routes and a long enclosed slide for thrilling, high-energy play.
