Forest Park, Orbost VIC
A Destination Playground for East Gippsland

Project Overview

Project overview

Delivered as part of the Forest Park redevelopment in Orbost, East Gippsland, this custom playground plays a central role in transforming the area into a vibrant community space and visitor destination along the Princes Highway.

Designed to support both local families and travelling visitors, the playground brings together adventure play, nature-based design and inclusive elements to cater for a wide age range. The result is a space that encourages connection, movement and everyday use, while contributing to the region’s ongoing recovery and growth.

Delivered in collaboration with East Gippsland Shire Council and Liz Filmer Landscaping, this project showcases a tailored, landscape-led approach to playground design, responding directly to community input and the unique character of the site.

Design and layout

A playground designed to inspire courage, confidence, and resilience through movement and exploration.

Set within the natural surrounds of Forest Park Orbost, the design embraces a strong connection to landscape, using predominantly timber elements paired with Australian steel for structure, durability and visual warmth.

The layout is built around a striking, multi-level custom play structure featuring elevated towers, connected platforms and varied access points. Changes in level and carefully integrated pathways create a natural flow through the space, encouraging exploration while maintaining accessibility for a broad range of users.

Community input played a key role in shaping the design, with a focus on creating a destination playground suitable for children aged 1–15, while still integrating seamlessly with surrounding park features including picnic areas, shelters and open space.

Play Elements

This fully custom playground combines large-scale adventure play with engaging ground-level experiences to create a well-balanced playspace:

  • Multi-tower custom playground structure with elevated platforms
  • Enclosed tube slide for high-impact, adventurous play
  • Open slide suited to younger and mid-range users
  • Climbing nets and rope elements for strength and coordination
  • Stepped and ramped access points supporting varied abilities
  • Timber detailing throughout for a natural, tactile play experience
  • Integrated play zones designed for movement, exploration and social interaction

The combination of timber aesthetics and Australian steel structure ensures the playground is both visually aligned with its surroundings and built to withstand high-use public environments, making it ideal for a regional destination like Orbost and the wider East Gippsland area.
