Project overview

South Surrey Park Playground in Surrey Hills has been renewed with new play equipment centred around accessibility, variety and connection to the park’s natural setting.

Delivered for the City of Boroondara, the equipment responds to community feedback calling for familiar favourites such as swings, a timber play unit and nature play, alongside more options for different ages and abilities.

At the heart of the playground is a custom Fortitude timber fort, supported by a custom Native agility trail, two swing areas, a double spring rocker and nature-inspired play features. Together, the equipment provides opportunities for climbing, sliding, swinging, balancing, imaginative play and interaction at ground level.

Design and layout

The main play unit takes the form of a custom timber fort, with two roofed towers connected by an elevated walkway. Vertical timber detailing gives the structure its fort-like character, while the deep green steel and pitched roofs suit the established park setting.

A climbing ramp provides one route onto the fort, while two slide experiences at different heights offer a choice of challenge. Beneath the platforms, interactive panels and a bucket and pulley system extend play around the base of the structure.

Beyond the fort, a quadruple swing set includes two toddler seats and two strap seats for older children. A separate birds nest swing provides another swinging experience, while the double spring rocker introduces shared movement play.

The custom Native agility trail adds a more physical sequence through the playground, combining a track glide, timber log walk, monkey bars and balance beam. Its curved green posts and timber elements complement the main fort while creating a distinct area for climbing, balancing and upper-body challenge.

Accessibility & Nature Discovery

Accessibility is supported through a mix of ground-level and shared play experiences. The separate basket swing provides a supportive option for swinging together, while the interactive panels and bucket and pulley system allow children to engage with the fort without accessing the elevated platforms.

The equipment offers a range of physical challenge levels, from ground-level activities and swinging through to climbing, balancing and overhead movement. This gives children greater choice in how they use and move through the playground.

Nature is carried through the equipment using natural timber, deep green finishes and custom wildlife panels designed by local artist Laura McKellar. Featuring a cockatoo, frog and other references to the surrounding environment, the panels make the timber fort specific to South Surrey Park.

Leaf-shaped activity panels and a timber butterfly seat continue the nature theme beyond the fort, adding interactive details and a memorable place to pause within the playground.
